This blog was developed as a resource for teachers who are looking to incorporate high quality and award winning trade books into their social studies curriculum. I have compiled and cited various reviews on these books, and additionally have listed online resources that will help teachers use these books for instructional purposes.

Piper's Ferry
Piper's Ferry
Written by: Clifton G. Wisler
"Tim Piper leaves New Orleans and heads to Texas in the 1830s to work with his cousin. His friend Zach Merkins convinces Tim of the importance of Texas securing its independence from Mexico. Zach journeys to the Alamo but Tim arrives too late to participate in the Battle. He does enlist in the Texas army and fights in the Battle of San Jacinto, all before his fifteenth birthday. Students can discuss the differing opinions evident in the novel regarding the role of the Mexican government in Texas and
can debate whether or not Texas independence was the only solution."
